Harrisburg: The City Beautiful

State Capitol

Although a terrible accident, the State Capitol could not have burnt down at a better time in regards to the City Beautiful Movement. The 1897 fire rendered the building completely unusable; it was clear that repairs simply would not be enough to save it. This sparked a debate that almost resulted in the capital of Pennsylvania being moved back to its original home in Philadelphia. The threat motivated city officials to rebuild a capitol building that Harrisburg and its citizens could be proud of; the result was an impressive new structure filled with ornate works of art that completely embodied the spirit of the City Beautiful Movement.
