Vance McCormick was elected mayor of Harrisburg in 1902 at the beginning of the City Beautiful Movement. McCormick knew that there was a chance that Harrisburg might cease to be the state capital, and he sought to make the city beautiful. McCormick strongly believed in the potential of Harrisburg to become a great and beautiful city. He made it one of his goals during his time in office to advance the new City Beautiful Movement in whatever ways he could. McCormick wanted to make the city as beautiful and prosperous as he knew it could be. After his very successful time as mayor, and after successfully advancing the movement, McCormick went on to great fame both nationally and internationally.
